I was an old time BBS guy and had seen the word Linux once or twice within the file libraries that I hosted on my BBS Mega City One in Concord CA back in 1993. A fellow sysop had mentioned setting up a slackware system and since he had educated me on the evils of windows and the glory of OS/2, I figured he may be on to something but my linux learning hadnt started yet. A few years later in 97 I laid my BBS to rest and started using this great new medium the INTERNET ( dramatic echo should follow)!!! It wasn't till 98 while on leave I was searching for something to tell me how the internet worked when I ran across a book called Using Linux the complete guide. Nothing like being a sailor with money and time so I purchased the behomth book and started my Linux Learning. Lucky me it came with cds!!! Soon after settling in Pascagouala MS, I decided to purchase a copy of Redhat and completed my first install. I was hooked, about a year or so later I discovered SMLUG and have been enjoying Linux and my LUG comrades.
